Too Damn Perfect

#PutiTrump | #WhatTheyVotedFor

Andrea Chalupa (@AndreaChalupa) and Brian Vastag (@brianvastag), via Twitter, 22 March 2017.

The setup is yet another tweetstorm, and, look, you have to be careful. To the one, Andrea Chalupa’s “thread about #RussiaGate and Paul Manafort’s $10M/year contract to further the interests of Putin’s government” is as likely as any, but it really does seem to bury the lede, that Donald Trump is a victim in all this:

@AndreaChalupa: 11. Can’t help but think today of what IC agent told me: Trump never wanted to win. They made him run. He’s trapped. And now IC closing in.

@BrianVastag: @AndreaChalupa Who’s the “they” here?

@AndreaChalupa: @brianvastag In DT’s eyes? Close friends and admirers. But they also happened to be people embedded with the Kremlin/Russian money.

In truth, it just seems too perfect; it can all be true, yet still be excrement. Was a time the guy in the mailroom could have told you what was up with the board and why the C.O.O. left in a swirl of temperament after the C.E.O. was fired, and it would have been accurate, and no reporter would have cited an unnamed company source.

The ultimate caveat is a clutch of confusing questions. What IC source would both have access to the information and leak it in this manner? The advice, of course, will be to watch the headlines, but come on. Eleventh in a tweetstrom about Manafort’s contract. That’s a buried lede. Why is it buried? No, really, we can all kind of imagine, right? But it really does sound just too damn perfect. And the they?

To the one, how is this not bait? To the other, Andrea Chalupa is hardly naïve, and seems well enough connected. No wonder her thread is drawing attention.

Thing is, we kind of get the idea that Mr. Trump wasn’t really in this to win, or didn’t expect to win, or some such. The idea that “they made him run”, though, just tends to stand out.
